US election: China congratulates Joe Biden on victory

The Newsroom

Available for over a year

China has offered belated congratulations to the US President-elect Joe Biden on his victory in the US presidential election. It had been among very few nations, including Russia, that had not yet acknowledged Mr Biden's win. Beijing faced fierce criticism and sanctions from President Trump over a range of issues, including trade, espionage and human rights. Correspondent Stephen McDonnell explains possible reasons for the delay in China's congratulations and how China might view the Biden administration.
