Series The New Arctic

How a melting permafrost is affecting life in the Arctic

The Compass

Available for over a year

Arctic warming is talking its toll on the communities and animals that live on the Siberian tundra, from infrastructure damage to loss of life, eroding land and endangering thousand-year-old cultures and traditional knowledge. Dr Zoia Vylka Ravna, Nenets-born anthropologist and educator, has lived on the tundra. She describes the challenges posed by an increasingly unpredictable climate and how dangerous infections, released by a melting permafrost, are threatening life there.
