What is GPS doing to our brains?

CrowdScience

Available for over a year

Professor Veronique Bohbot has been studying what happens to our brains when we use GPS to navigate. Her research suggests that when using this technology we go on ‘autopilot’, following directions rather than building a mental map of the surroundings and their relationship to us in our minds. She suggests that in the long term this could lead to a reduction in size of our hippocampus, a part of the brain key to learning, memory and navigation. However, she thinks if we use GPS to learn about our environment rather than just following directions we can enrich our hippocampus – keeping our brains healthy.
