The subtitle ‘Gran Partita’ suggests this is a large ambitious work, but was not given to the piece by Mozart himself. It has a mysterious composition history, but is thought to have first been performed in 1784 at a benefit concert for the Vienna-based basset-horn player, Anton Stadler, who Mozart wrote his Clarinet Concerto for.
