Plans for path through Shepton Mallet tunnel

Claire Carter on ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Somerset

Available for over a year

The path along the old Somerset and Dorset Railway trackbed would connect to the Strawberry Line and be part of the planned Somerset Circle route. Plans have been submitted to Mendip District Council for the multi-user path from Shepton Mallet across the Bath Road Viaduct, through a tunnel at Windsor Hill and across Hamwood Viaduct. Gavin Mayall, a Shepton Mallet town councillor and member of the Friends of Windsor Hill Tunnels group, talks to reporter Ross Pollard about the path and the history of that stretch of old railway line. One of the tunnels was used by Rolls Royce in the 1960s to test engines for Concorde! Image: Paul Whitewick
