In 2016, Dame Deborah James told her GP that she thought she had bowel cancer. She said she was "actually laughed at – not once but three times over the course of six months." After her long battle, in May 2022, Deborah announced that she was receiving end of life care. She has raised over six million pounds with her Bowelbabe fund for Cancer Research UK. ѿý Essex's Ben Fryer spoke Kate Alden, who is CEO of Helen Rollason Cancer charity and Patricia Leaver, who got tested after watching Deborah James' campaign and says: "If it wasn't for Deborah, the superhero that she is, I wouldn't be here today.”
