Russian referendum: ‘Pretend you are not home’

Newsday

Available for over a year

Voting is taking place for a final day in widely discredited referendums organised by Russia in four regions of Ukraine. Western countries have condemned the hastily arranged votes as a sham; they view them as a precursor to the Russian annexation of Ukrainian territory. One of the areas voting is Kherson. This man has fled the city but given security fears for his family who stayed behind, he asked to remain anonymous. He told Newsday: “If you see they are knocking at your apartment…pretend that you are not home and most likely they will not waste time in knocking at your door and they just leave.” (Picture: An injured man casts his vote at a hospital in controversial referendums in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
