After much talk over recent months about Southend bidding to become the UK City of Culture in 2029, ѿý Essex learns that Southend-on-Sea City Council is unlikely to submit a bid due to “the growing financial challenge” it faces. In a statement, the council said the pressure of resources needed for social care means it can’t recommend making a bid. The MP for Southend West, Anna Firth, tells ѿý Essex she is surprised and very disappointed by the news. Mrs Firth also gives ѿý Essex her views on proposed changes to ѿý local radio.
