Battle to get Ukrainian refugee child into an Essex school

Sonia Watson

Available for over a year

Louise Wilby from Hockley made the decision back in August to help a family fleeing the war in Ukraine. After facing problems with visas, Natalia and her young daughter arrived in the UK at the end of September. But since their arrival, Louise hasn't received any funding from the council and is now facing a battle to get Natalia's five-year-old daughter into a school, despite living right beside one. A spokesperson for Academies Enterprise Trust, which runs Hockley Primary School, said: 鈥淲e recognise how difficult this situation is for Natalia and her daughter Amelia and want to try and find a way through this. There are legal limits on how many children you can have in primary classes and this is why we can鈥檛 provide a place in Hockley primary. We鈥檙e looking into whether there are any alternatives though so that Natalia鈥檚 daughter can take up a place in a local school.鈥
