A coin of King Athelstan comes to Malmesbury, where he's buried

Sue Kinnear

Available for over a year

King Athelstan ruled during the Anglo-Saxon period and was the first King of England. He has a long association with Malmesbury and is buried there. There is an empty memorial tomb in the town's Abbey. He is buried in the Abbey grounds, but nobody knows where exactly. Volunteer-run Athelstan Museum in the town has now bought a coin from his reign at auction, showing his face and saying that he's King of England. Volunteer Jonathan Tucker spotted the coin and talks to reporter Steven Clements about it.
