1. A Journey to Tynemouth

The Girls: The Holocaust Safe House

Available for over a year

Ten thousand Jewish children were accepted into the UK before World War Two broke out. Put onto trains by their desperate parents, many of them travelled alone. Few of them knew where they were headed. In 1939 over twenty girls aged between 5 and 14 made their way to the north east of England. For three of them; Ruth D, Margot and Alisa, the journey was life-changing. Alisa describes her panic at being put on a train in London alone as a German-speaking 10 year old and told casually to 鈥渓ook for Newcastle鈥. Margot explains how she was sent to Tynemouth after a case of mistaken identity. The girls see the north sea 鈥 and the hostel - for the first time. Narrated by Lauren Laverne Written and researched by Jane Downs and Jo Lonsdale Executive Producer : Rik Martin
