Playwright and performer V is probably best known as the author of the 1996 play The Vagina Monologues, which has been translated into 48 languages and performed in 140 countries. The play attracted all-star casts featuring the likes of Glenn Close, Jane Fonda and Oprah Winfrey, not to mention V herself. She went on to found V-Day, a movement which aims to end violence against all women and girls. In 2019, V’s book The Apology described abuse she had suffered at the hands of her father which ultimately led to her renouncing her birth name to distance herself from him. A powerful and inspiring speaker, we join her now on Woman’s Hour in December 2004 as she discusses body image and her new play The Good Body.
