Beacon lit at Dunstable Downs to remember D-Day

There was a public outcry when it was thought the event wouldn’t happen. The National Trust was able to overcome the obstacles to allow people to gather on the hillside for the 80th anniversary of the historic event. On 6 June 1944, tens of thousands of soldiers landed on five beaches in Normandy, northern France. The landings were the start of the campaign to liberate Nazi-occupied north-western Europe during the Second World War.
