The Goldhanger gold rush

Secret Essex

Available for over a year

In 1904, a group of people from Goldhanger, near Maldon, began searching for gold on a remote and uninhabited Norwegian island called Spitsbergen. Ernest Mansfield, along with three other residents, founded the Northern Exploration Company. Its objective was to extract gold minerals from Spitsbergen and import them back to the UK. David Newman, from the Goldhanger History Group and co-author of a book about Mansfield, tells their story. (Credit: Paul Souders/Getty Images)
