When Dovercourt said Hi-de-Hi! campers

Secret Essex

Available for over a year

The sitcom Hi-de-Hi! was set in the fictional seaside town of Crimpton-on-Sea, but it was actually filmed at the Warner holiday camp in Dovercourt. The site near Harwich opened in 1937 and shortly afterwards was requisitioned by the British government to house children who had been evacuated from Germany by the Kindertransport programme. Janey Nice lived and worked at the camp with her family when the show was being filmed there during the 1980s - and even got a chance to be an extra. (Photo credit: Brian Moody/ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½)
