Carlisle Gaol - Secrets of the last public execution

Secret Cumbria

Available for over a year

The condemned cell is in Carlisle Citadel, which dominates the city's southern entrance. Now closed to public while awaiting redevelopment as Cumbria University Citadel Campus. As Andrew Carter discovers it was home to the criminal and civil courts, that were a chilling reminder of the Victorians zero tolerance of crime. A time when Cumbrians were transported to Australia, and public hangings in Carlisle still attracted huge crowds.
