A lecturer from the University of Essex has designed his own map of the London Underground. Maxwell Roberts from Walton-on-the-Naze felt the London Underground looked 'terrible' and was 'confusing' so he has designed his own one using concentric circles, which he says makes the layout ‘easier to read’. Maxwell's version of Harry Beck's famous map was published on social media and it went 'viral' with one million engagements and 17,000 likes in 24 hours. Picture credit: Max Roberts. A TfL spokesperson said: “The Tube map is an iconic piece of world-renowned design, which was first created by Harry Beck in 1933 and has grown and evolved like the city it represents. It is widely used by millions of people every day and we have no plans to change its design. While there have been some previous ‘circular’ designs of a London Tube map created by fans and other designers over the decades, this design was specifically created in-house by our design team for this campaign and only shows the London Underground lines.”
