Burials reveal the Anglo Saxons who lived in Herts

Available for over a year

The graves were discovered during landscaping work at Castle Park in Bishop’s Stortford. Tee Edmonds is the site supervisor at the Museum of London Archaeology. The burials were found close to the remains of Waytemore Castle, but predate it by more than a century. They range from children to adults, with some stacked one on top of another. Some were buried with stone “pillows” and most were in an east west direction which suggests they were Christian burials. Archaeologists now plan to use DNA techniques to establish any family relationships, and work out if they were originally from the Bishop’s Stortford area. Picture: East Herts Council.
