The Essex nurse who inspired Band Aid

Available for over a year

In 1984, a Red Cross nurse from Essex was working in Ethiopia where millions were facing starvation. It was Claire Bertschinger's appearance in Michael Burke's news report that inspired musician Bob Geldolf to start 'Band Aid'. 'Do They Know Its Christmas' spent five weeks at number one, and helped raise money to help those affected by the devastating famine. Claire is from Sheering near Harlow, and has been recalling her experiences in Africa to Akylah Rodriguez... Picture credit: Larry Ellis/Hulton Archive/Getty Images.
