First rare beetle found in Dorset for more than 200 years

Available for over a year

One of Britain’s largest species of beetle has been found in Dorset for the first time in more than 200 years. Bournemouth University student Wren Franklin came across two great silver water beetles whilst surveying animal and plant life in the Blackmore Vale as part of his master’s degree. Wren checked his discovery with the county’s recorder for beetles, Adrian Mylward, who confirmed the last recorded sighting of them in Dorset was in 1821 by the influential entomologist JC Dale.
