“It is possible to do great things from small places” - that's the motto Tunde Onakoya says has helped him go from a childhood of poverty in Nigeria to a record-breaking chess marathon in New York. Onakoya set the world record for the longest ever chess marathon, playing against Shawn Martinez in New York’s Times Square for 64 hours. The event helped raise money for the charitable organisation Onakoya founded - Chess In Slums Africa - to help children growing up in similar circumstances to his own. Onakoya, takes Not by the Playbook’s Katie Smith back to when he first discovered chess in a barber shop in Ikorodu and how that has led him to where he is today, including wanting to give back.
