More than 150,000 Poles and 35,000 Ukrainians resettled in the UK following World War Two and many were attracted to opportunities in the thriving Yorkshire textiles industry. Bradford soon became home to large close-knit Polish and Ukrainian communities. Back in 1955 Geoffrey Wheeler spoke to a Polish textile worker living in the city. In this fascinating clip he explains how he learned English in a concentration camp and after moving to Bradford found happiness through starting a new life. Starting in July, the exhibition Tu i Tam/Tyt i Tam (respectively, Polish and Ukrainian for "Here and There") for Bradford 2025 explores the fascinating histories of these communities through unique objects, rare archival materials and photographs.
