Boss battle: Pet shop wins name row with Hugo Boss

Available for over a year

When Ben McDonald from Bootle named his business Boss Pets, he was celebrating a bit of Scouse pride, “boss” meaning brilliant. But what started as a light-hearted local name quickly turned serious when global fashion brand Hugo Boss sent him a legal letter demanding he drop the word “Boss.” Faced with the might of a multi-billion-pound company, Ben enlisted the help of local lawyer Francis McEntagart to take on the fashion giant. Against the odds, they reached an agreement that means Boss Pets can keep its name, as long as they stay out of the pet fashion game.
