Rothley’s secret Anglo-Saxon Cross

Secret Leicestershire

Available for over a year

In the grounds of St Mary and St John the Baptist church in Rothley village stands a piece of ancient art from sometime around the time of the Vikings. The Anglo-Saxon cross dates from the mid ninth century when this part of England was under the political control of Mercia. It tells the story of the very beginnings of our county, when Christianity was just taking hold - it's an astonishing rarity and an almost unbelievable survivor. ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Leicester’s Ben Jackson went to take a look with archaeologist Peter Liddle. Produced by Pete Wardman.
