On the morning of September 1st, 1905 a train leaves London Liverpool Street, bound for the Norfolk seaside town of Cromer. An hour later, as it approaches Witham station, disaster strikes, as most of the fourteen carriages of the Cromer Express leave the tracks. 11 people were killed - including a 10-year old child. 71 others were injured, 66 of which were passengers. It remains one of the worst-ever railway disasters in the east of England, and could have been much worse if it weren't for the heroic actions of three Essex signalmen whose quick actions saved hundreds of lives and prevented a much greater catastrophe.
