Neneh Cherry is a singer, songwriter, rapper, actor, and occasional broadcaster. She was born in Stockholm in 1964 to a very musical family. Her step-father was the jazz musician Don Cherry, and amongst her five siblings there are more jazz performers and record producers. The popstar Mabel is her daughter. Neneh came to London in the late 70s, aged 14, after dropping dropped out of school. It was in the midst of the punk era and she lived in a squat in Battersea. Throughout the 80s she was in several bands, including The Slits, New Age Steppers, Rip Rig + Panic, and Float Up CP. Over the years she’s embraced a number of genres including dub, electronica, jazz, hip-hop and punk. Nowadays, she splits her time between Stockholm and London. Neneh Cherry revealed her favourite haunts, memories, pet hates and everything in between with Robert Elms. This interview was first broadcast in November 2014.
