The origins of the name Gallowtree Gate are from its use as the road to the gallows where public executions were held in medieval Leicester. Condemned prisoners would have walked from there to the gallows in London Road, which were situated near to an old crossroads by the present day Victoria Park gates. 700 hundred or so years ago was a time when stealing a cow could have seen you facing the hangman’s noose. Those found guilty were hanged by the neck until death in front of a crowd of onlookers. But, a handful of people survived the experience of the gallows in Leicester. ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Leicester’s Ben Jackson found out their stories with medieval archaeologist Mathew Morris. Produced by Pete Wardman.
