Joseph Banks' voyage of scientific discovery
Secret LincolnshireAvailable for over a year
Joseph Banks was one of the most influential people of the 18th and 19th centuries, yet is often overshadowed by the likes of Captain James Cook and Charles Darwin. He grew up in Lincolnshire where he developed a love for natural sciences, and went on to be the chief scientist on Cook's voyage on HMS Endeavour, the first purposely-designed round-the-world scientific expedition. Banks discovered thousands of species of animals and plants unknown to people in Europe, including kangaroos in Australia. In later life he advised politicians and royalty, helped create Kew Gardens and was president of the Royal Society for more than 40 years until his death in 1820. Produced by Patrycja Boryka.
