What is life like for an athlete living with Type 1 Diabetes?

More Than The Score

Available for over a year

On World Diabetes Day we look at how some of the world's best known athletes live with the condition. When not managed properly, it can cause issues with your heart, feet and vision. In very serious cases it can lead to heart disease or kidney failure. England and Exeter Chiefs, Henry Slade, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes just before he signed his first professional rugby contract . He tells ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Sport's Sarah Dawkins about how people wrongly believe it's caused from eating too much sugar and that there's a stigma around the condition. Sam Brand is a professional cyclist with Team Novo Nordisk, who are a US based team who are made up entirely of diabetics. He joins Sarah and John Bennett to discuss what he's doing to educate the public and change attitudes towards the condition. More than the Score is the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ World Service's daily podcast exploring stories from all over the world of sport. Every Monday to Friday, we're telling stories beyond the scoreline, from tennis to football, boxing to bobsleigh, and rugby league to the NFL. We've got interviews with extraordinary athletes like pole vault titan Mondo Duplantis, boxing royalty Cecilia Braekhus and tennis legend Boris Becker, as well as the experts working behind the scenes, from top football scouts to physios who keep NBA stars in peak condition. Plus, we've got the expertise of the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½'s top journalists, who share their insights from decades of covering sport at all levels. And if you've got your own take on the stories we cover, we'd love to hear from you. Email morethanthescore@bbc.co.uk, or WhatsApp us on 0044 800 032 0470.
