Newsday

Available for over a year

A former al-Shabab commander is running for the office of regional president in Somalia. Mukhtar Robow has officially defected from the islamist insurgent movement, but he is still wanted by the US. The regional commissioner of Dar es Salaam - Paul Makonda - has released a video message encouraging the general public to denounce gay couples. Same-sex sexual acts are described as unnatural offences which are punishable by jail sentences no less than one year under Tanzanian law. US President Donald Trump has offered condolences at the Pennsylvania synagogue where 11 Jewish worshippers were shot dead at the weekend. The senior rabbi at the Synagogue, Jeffrey Myers, said that he and his congregation were glad of the presidential visit. But some local Jewish groups have not been as welcoming.
