Syria to join alliance against Islamic State Group

Newsday

Available for 29 days

US officials say Syria has agreed to join the global alliance against Islamic State. The news came following a meeting between President Trump and Syria's President Ahmed Al Sharaa in Washington. Not long ago, Al Sharaa was the head of an al-Qaeda affiliate who had a 10 million dollar US bounty on his head. His new government has been fighting the remaining ISIS forces inside Syria. We get Syrian political reaction to the deal. In the United States the Senate, with the help of Democrats, have passed a bill to end the longest government shutdown. We take a look at what the deal includes with a Democratic Congressman. We turn to Tanzania where the Deputy Chairperson of Tanzania’s main opposition party CHADEMA, John Heche and several other senior party leaders, have been released on bail after almost two weeks in detention. The arrests followed protests over the exclusion of leading opposition figures in the presidential election at the end of last month.
