Let there be light!

Historical sites in Saltburn and Redcar have been lit up as part of an ambitious and expensive scheme.

Two ceremonies were held to mark the switch-on of the lights, which will be on from dusk to midnight all year round as part of the Lighting Our Culture project.

Forces’ veterans marched to the Cenotaph on Wednesday, October 5, and on the following night, a fog horn sounded as the lights were switched on at Saltburn Pier.

In Redcar, the Cenotaph lighting cost £12,250 and it's cost a total of £385,000 for the pier and amusement arcade to be floodlit, and for coloured lighting to be added to the tracks of the cliff lift.

The Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism, Councillor Dave Fitzpatrick said, “We’re absolutely delighted with the end results.Ìý

"They’re really eye-catching and we’re sure, particularly at Saltburn, that they’re going to be a real visitor attraction.â€

As a lover of Saltburn (grandmalived there)I was devastated when the pier was not going to be re-built and the idea of lighting - well. What about light pollution, there is too much already.

Dave
As a visitor to Saltburn, I most definately approve of the new lighting scheme including the lift lighting! Good work!
