The Office of National Statistics found that Middlehaven has the lowest life expectancy at 67.8 years, compared to the highest in Moreton which is 93.4 years. In the Middlehaven ward, at one of the many garages, the mechanics there workers told us said they smoked, “60 plus fags a day, 10 pints a day and then at work I eat sausage sandwiches and drink tea. I think that 60 is an old age to live to.â€
At the Bridge Café, known for its savouries made of mince meat, sausage meat and onion, its owner said that she can’t see the harm in the odd bacon sandwich. “I think I’ll live till I’m 90 the way I feel. I believe in eating healthy but eating bacon and sausage sandwiches didn’t do me any harm as a kid.†At the Captain Cook pub, it’s 11.30am and 71 year old Harry is already in his usual seat. “I smoked two pouches of baccy a week and drink ten pounds worth of whiskey a day. I get meals from Heron’s and tinned meals, I’ve got here rather by luck than judgment. "It’s well known fact that Middlesbrough’s air is totally carcinogenic, it’s the environment that we live in (that’s responsible for lower expectancy).
