Heugh Gun Battery

The guns are back on our coastline.

Heugh Gun Battery restored

At one point, you'd have been forgiven for thinking it was never going to happen, after Hartlepool's Heugh Gun Battery failed to make the final of the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½'s 'Restoration' porgramme. Then, something happened...

In December 2006, just a few months after missing out on the finals of 'Restoration', the volunteers who had campaigned so long to restore the 19th Century gun battery were awarded £315,000Ìýby the Heritage Lottery Fund, which said it was impressed by their passion for the site and its heritage.

Heugh Gun Battery

The site is now a visitor attraction.

By August 2008, the crumbling concrete had been transformed into an authentic wartime experience.

Built in 1859, the battery is famous for returning fire when the German Navy bombarded the town in 1914.
