Emma Frost was kind enough to sit down with ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Writers in 2025 and talk through her career journey, as well as share a wealth of advice based on her experiences working as a writer, exec producer, and showrunner across multiple TV Shows in both the US and UK throughout her career. 

Below, our extended interview with Emma is split into two parts: Part 1 - Writing Essentials & Part 2 - Case Studies. Part 1 sees Emma cover general writing advice, how she progressed from Theatre into TV, her route from development to writing her own scripts, and much more. Part 2 will be going live on our website next week - in which Emma will break down her specific experiences working on shows such as Shameless, The White Queen, and delves into the different meanings that are attached to the term showrunner in the US and UK (Part 2 will be available on the 8th October).

Emma is currently working as writer, producer, and showrunner on Netflix's upcoming adaptation of Edith Wharton's The Age Of Innocence which is in production. Prior to this, Emma Frost worked on such shows as The White Queen, Jamaica Inn, Shameless, and The White Princess.

In the below 2013 interview from our archive, Emma Frost talks to us about her journey from fine artist, to script editor – to celebrated TV writer. She talks about how her training as a painter has helped her to ‘write portraits’ and how she finds inspiration in the people around her.

Emma talks about her writing process – she doesn’t have a structure to how she approaches her writing day and can easily spend 18 hours a day writing without leaving the house.

She stresses that writing ‘is a muscle’ and that the best way to develop and improve as a writer, is to forget the self-consciousness and just keep writing.
