Just because it's Christmas doesn't mean it's any less busy. Here's a round-up of some of the things that have caught our eye on the web in the past few days.

at has provided of 's article .

From Andrew's post:

The beta version of the أغر؟´«أ½ iPlayer desktop application, using and our DRM technology launched last week and has once again shown how the أغر؟´«أ½ are leading the way here - , , and other broadcasters really need to learn from the أغر؟´«أ½'s experiences and make their content available on platforms other than ."

Also on the topic of iPlayer, the impact of the new download manager on P2P technology provider :

Kontiki's Director of Marketing Bill Wishon declined to comment on the impact the أغر؟´«أ½'s decision will have on his company, but told us that Kontiki is "adding more customers each quarter". However, the أغر؟´«أ½'s departure leaves Kontiki with only three major broadcasting customers, and its unclear how long the company will be able to retain them. British broadcaster , and local competitor Channel 4 actually got offered a chance to adopt the أغر؟´«أ½'s iPlayer technology, ."

The 's Tony Hirst has been inspired by the recently launched custom Cأغر؟´«أ½ iPlayer. He for the Open University to have its own custom iPlayer to house its vast (and growing) collection of educational content:

[T]he OU has been co-producing content with the أغر؟´«أ½ for many years; much of the recent output has been prime-time or early evening content on أغر؟´«أ½1 and أغر؟´«أ½2; that is, it's quite watchable, general interest programming:-) If the أغر؟´«أ½ sorts out making archive content available via iPlayer, then we'll have a reasonable amount of back catalogue material across science and technology, the arts, health and so on that could be used to populate an OU iPlayer channel."

And finally, an apology. We're sorry if we frightened you. If, , you have been unable to sleep ever since the HD team produced their new test card, we can assure you that only eats viewers who haven't paid their . !

I'm a big fan of the أغر؟´«أ½, so please don't take what I'm about to say as a rant against the أغر؟´«أ½ ;-)

Good on the أغر؟´«أ½ for making iPlayer available across multple platforms, but what happened to the old streams for things such as أغر؟´«أ½ News 24? I used to stream News 24 on a Linux desktop at work, on which Flash really doesn't work too well. As far as I'm aware, there's now no way to use tools such as mplayer to view أغر؟´«أ½ content, which in some way I feel is a step backwards.

Other than that, thumbs up and keep up the good work!

    Andy.

I know this isn't entirely relevant to the post, but what is the iPlayer stance on the Xbox 360? Netflix in the US are streaming movies onto the console, so the technology is available, but is it a priority or a future goal or... what? Just wondering iPlayer team.

The أغر؟´«أ½ are doing a *fantastic* job of pushing this forward.

I personall use iPlayer on multiple PCs, on my Nokia N96, and on the WII. Yes not everything's perfect, but it's pretty good.

And no sorrow for the loss of Kontiki. It only appeared to cause problems on my PCs (and only supported windows) - easily driving CPU high with just a few downloads running, regularly corrupting it's store and generally being of seemingly poor quality.

Hoorah - the new flash player is simple, lightweight and seems to "just work" on MANY platforms.

To add - I really hope CHannel4/ITV/Sky end up using the same system (despite the ofcom/sky competition issue) as I do believe it would benefit the end user over multiple systems.

I no longer use 4od/sky due to kontiki, and itv/five I just forget about as it's single platform.

Of course most of my fav progs are on the bbc anyway ;-)
