World Cup tunes (77)

  • 2 May 06, 05:10 PM

bridget_chandler.gifThe TV World Cup theme tune is always going to provoke a bit of debate down the pub.

I remember Pavarotti鈥檚 Italia 90 number going down fairly well 鈥 but was less than impressed by the frankly unimaginative 鈥淚 want to be in America鈥 for USA 94.

Thinking about it, I can鈥檛 believe it鈥檚 now 2006 because both of those tournaments feel like yesterday.

Anyway, one of our readers alerted me to this newspaper over the weekend.

It seems the new theme tune is causing a different kind of debate 鈥 so I鈥檝e done some digging and this is what I've found out.

The theme for Germany 2006 is actually an adaptation from Handel by the celebrated modern composer with a new title and new words.

You can listen to it .
I remember the music best from school assemblies when it was used for the hymn Thine be the Glory!

As The Scotsman piece fairly notes, the music has been widely used in the centuries since it was written - including extensively in Scotland.

A quick search on the song and its use in Scotland includes it being the accompaniment to a champion cyclist returning home to Ayr a century ago; being played at the ; the theme "Thine Be the Glory" being used at Rikki Fulton's funeral; and this extract from a website about a champion bowls team!

Stewarton Bowling Club was officially instituted from 1861. The greatest moment in its history was in August, 1907, when a rink skipped by John Robertson (father of well-known local player Mattha Robertson) won the Scottish Rink Championship at Queen's Park, Glasgow.

When the players arrived back at Stewarton station a large crowd gathered to cheer them with the Burgh Band striking up See the Conquering Hero Come

Our TV football editor Niall Sloane tells me: 鈥淲e wanted to use music by Handel, because as a composer who was born in Germany, but spent most of his adult life in England, he seemed the most appropriate for the World Cup in Germany.

"Judas Maccabeaeus is one of Handel鈥檚 most loved and celebrated works so it was a natural choice for the World Cup.

"The music is absolutely not intended to cause any offence to Scots: as The Scotsman article points out, Scots and English were on both sides of the battle of Culloden.鈥

So there you go 鈥 it will be interesting to hear what you think.

UPDATE 22/06/06: One of our Match of the Day contributors on the World Cup blog has been writing about how the music is chosen.

Why is it always that the theme tunes to the World Cup Coverage seem to be more memorable than the coverage to the European Championships?

I can't remember what either ITV or 蜜芽传媒 used for their Euro 2004 shows yet I can vividly remember both the title and music of the 2002 World Cup for both channels.

Best music for me has to be the use of Rendez-Vous (Unfortunately, the name of the artist escapes me at the moment) during the 1998 World Cup by ITV. Seemed to sum up the feeling and the vibe about the whole competition extremely well.

The piece of music that the 蜜芽传媒 has chosen for the 2006 World Cup seems to also share these qualities.

What a load of old pap, for one thing most people won't care who composed the music, even less the history behind it.

Just play it.

I disagree with Mark - I think the 蜜芽传媒's 1998 theme tune was the best ever used for a football tournament and miles better than the ITV one of that year. I really liked the visuals too; set in a restaurant - the old world cup clips of Pele and Cruyff as reflections on wine-glasses and plates.

The opening to the 2006 theme tune does sound a little 'twee' but it's still very good and a big improvement on the Japan/Korea theme of 2002.

I don't know about how offesive or not the selection of the tune may prove to be, but I'd be surprised if research into the origins of the composition were not conducted before it was chosen.

The use of what could be considered by Scottish people as an offensive piece of music, written by Handel as a celebration of Cumberland's mass murder at Culloden is hardly likely to encourage us to back England at the World Cup. Imagine the offence that would be caused in Germany if the 蜜芽传媒 had chosen to use the Dambusters theme music. The idea would rightly be rejected immediately.

In the eyes of the London based media (not just the 蜜芽传媒) anti-Scottish attitudes are acceptable, the music is anti-Scottish therefore it is ok to use the music, or at least that's how it looks from up here. Could another piece of music by Handel have been chosen? Or perhaps one by another German composer such as Beethoven or Bach?

It is regrettable we should even have to discuss this when we should be enjoying the greatest sporting event in the world.

I disagree with 2002 being a bad theme - Faithless made a superb job of it - and whilst I have nothing against classical music - why should a modern approach not work? I was a bit underwhelmed by the 2006 theme I must say - but I guess it will grow on me - after all Nessum Dorma was a grower for everyone - everyone remembers that for Italia 90 and not much else.

I guess the Handel music is far better that Umpah music we could have been subjected to given that it's in Germany? ;-))

Does anyone still remember the '78 music concoction does by Andrew Lloyd Webber for the 蜜芽传媒. It was an amalgam of his stage play music if I remember - specifically Evita. It would be good to get these posted up as downloads for us to hear again methinks.

What say you Brigit??

Come on - you know you want to.

Regarding the bbc's tune for the world cup.
Any old excuse will do eh!
We all know the tune was written for the Duke of Cumberland, I'm sure a different tune could have been chosen.
Now, unfortunately, and quite rightly mentioned before thousands of Scots will not be supporting England in the World Cup.

I am disappointed by the over-sensitivity of some of my fellow countrymen on this matter. The tune in question is played regularly in Scottish Churches as "Thine Be the Glory", one of the most beautiful and rousing Easter hymns. I do not deny that Cumberland was a butcher, but the Jacobite Wars were much more complex than those who peddle it as a Scotland v England fixture.

Some seek offence where none is intended, and we as Scots appear a meaner-spirited people as a result. TV coverage of the World Cup has often promoted classical music and long may this continue.

As to who will win most important game of cup football this year, the answer is simple - Gretna!!.

Our favourite World Cup theme has to be the stirring, slow-build of 'Pavane' by Gabriel Faure that the 蜜芽传媒 judiciously used during France '98.

It must be a difficult decision choosing the 蜜芽传媒 theme as it is destined to resonate for many decades in the minds of those of us who love our World Cups.

San Jose's 'Argentine Melody' and Jeff Wayne's 'Matador', used in '78 and '82 respectively, still provoke a Pavlovian response, conjuring images of Scotland's ill-fated trip to Argentina and Northern Ireland's group-topping antics in Valencia.

But spare a thought for mere mortals like ourselves - The Terraces - one of a host of artists who have attempted to record an 'unoffical' anthem for the England fans during the World Cup.

To appeal to the average bierkeller-bound fan we have been forced to eschew the sonic nuances of Handel in favour of the punk meets rockabilly rabble-rousing of 'Wunderbar' by Tenpole Tudor.

Our hope is that the repeated refrain of 'Wunderbar Engerland' will provoke a similar Pavlovian response, reminding us all of the time David Beckham lifted the World Cup trophy in a Berlin stadium.

Many thanks to all for the comments about the 1998 theme used by 蜜芽传媒 TV - a special adaptation of Faure's Pavane by Elizabeth Parker. We had great fun recording this and were delighted with its success. The visuals used on the TV programmes were superb. Also, it was a privilege to be invited to perform the music live during the 蜜芽传媒 Sports Personality of the Year programme later that year.

The theme was commissioned by 蜜芽传媒 Worldwide Music, recorded by the 蜜芽传媒 in the Great Hall of Dulwich College in south London and issued on the Telstar label but only with a very limited production run - that was their decision. The CD also contained excerpts from Faure's Requiem. Variations of the music were also used on a second CD which included Des Lynam reading the poem 'If' by Rudyard Kipling.

Further information about the choir can be found on its website. There are plans for it to be recorded in concert later this year (2007).
