Doctor
Who today:
First, a little history. Apart from time-travelling to UK
Gold, video and DVD, Doctor Who has departed from our TV screens.
Gone, but not forgotten.
Should you seek out the Doctor, youÂ’ll find him in the
Big Finish audio adventures, and in the comic strip thatÂ’s
been running in the official Doctor Who Magazine (DWM) since
1979.
You will also find him in the the masses of short stories
and fan fiction that have been written over the decades.
And in a range of full-length novels which have been running
since 1991.
Today, the Doctor has had more adventures in print than he
ever had on screen.
He’s alive and well – though if you want to follow
his latest adventures you have to be more proactive than just
turning on your TV.
Who
is the Doctor?
The current Doctor, in the books, audios and comic strip,
is the eighth, as played by Bristol-based actor Paul McGann.

may remember the tele-movie that was broadcast in 1996. Since
then, the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ has published more than 60 original novels starring
the Eighth Doctor (Reckless Engineering is the 63rd) plus
a similar number starring his previous incarnations.
Paul McGannÂ’s likeness graces the DWM comic strip, and
he has so far recorded two seasons of audio adventures for
Big Finish.
The eighth Doctor is a passionate adventurer, in appearance
somewhat like a romantic poet, a dashing, Byronic figure with
a touch of the Hellfire Club about him.
HeÂ’s a moral crusader like his past selves, though when
the stakes are high he sometimes has to make hard decisions
which his companions donÂ’t agree with.
ThatÂ’s the idea at the core of Reckless Engineering -
that sometimes difficult choices have to be made to save the
Earth, or the universe, or, in this case, reality itself.
Yes, the stakes really are that high...
