About This Event
鈥楾his is the best of me鈥, wrote Elgar on completing the Dream of Gerontius. 鈥楾his, if anything of mine, is worth your memory.鈥
Gerontius is the old man reflecting on his life and contemplating death. Elgar imagined him to be 鈥榓 man like us, not a Priest or a Saint鈥 Therefore, I鈥檝e not filled his part with Church tunes and rubbish but a good, healthy full-blooded romantic, remembered worldliness.鈥 The result is Elgar鈥檚 greatest choral work and possibly his masterpiece, full of drama and some of the composer鈥檚 most touching music, from the hushed, emotionally charged opening to the sublime 鈥楢ngel鈥檚 Farewell鈥.
鈥淭he tenor, Stuart Jackson, with his imposing physical presence, sang wonderfully well, with a beautiful, powerful, well-modulated voice, impeccable diction and stage instinct.鈥 SCHERZO
