A love
of sport has grown into something bigger and put a team from the
Forest of Dean in touch with all sections of their community.
The
Forest of Dean Community Radio sports team members take to the airways
like true professionals every Friday evening with all the latest
sports news and views from the area.
Their
show features interviews with people involved in both the big sporting
events and the smaller community clubs.
Skittles,
angling and bowling are included alongside the major rugby and football
fixtures, and youth teams are also recognised and supported.
But
behind the scenes, the team members are now also involved with non-sporting
sections of the community too, sharing and spreading the skills
they have learned through their radio work.

Our self-confidence and interpersonal skills have increased,
because we are regularly talking to lots of different people
- including our sporting 'heroes'. |

One
recent project has seen them working with primary schoolchildren
on radio plays. This has helped the children to develop their storytelling,
listening and speaking skills.
The
finished productions have been aired during the team's show.
Before
taking to the airwaves, the team members, who all have day jobs,
were given training in interviewing techniques and technical and
editing skills.
"The
first thing you have to do is to get over the fear of the microphone,"
said one of the team.
"Since
we started we have all gained in other, unexpected ways, too. Our
self-confidence and interpersonal skills have increased, because
we are regularly talking to lots of different people - including
our sporting 'heroes'."
The
team members also feel they have learned a huge amount about the
community they live in.
They
are now aware of the large number of people who work in the community
to keep clubs and groups going for the benefit of others.
Through
the radio show, the team members are able to publicly recognise
and support the work of such groups.
