FACTS

+ The 'Get Rid Of Your Gremlins and Get On' campaign aims to help adults improve their reading, writing, language and maths.

+ The idea behind the gremlins is to represent what it feels like for people with poor literacy, numeracy and language skills.

+ The gremlins bring to life the feelings of frustration, fear and isolation that adults can face in everyday situations that most of us take for granted, like telling the time or writing an address.

+ The aim of the campaign is to encourage adults facing this challenge to 'get rid of their gremlins and get on with their lives'.

+ Since the start of the campaign, they have proved to be very popular – with over 150,000 new learners having passed a test in literacy or numeracy since the campaign started.

To all of you out there with gremlins ...

The day I saw the advert it came home to me that I had to do something about my own gremlins.

This was the day I rang Stroud College to find out about how and where I had to go and see about courses to help me with my reading and writing.

To all the people out there with gremlins in the closet - if you admit you have got a problem there are courses to help you.

I was given the telephone number of basic skills classes at Stroud and Dursley colleges. So I rang Dursley College to make an appointment to see Anna Stephenson about how to go about getting on a course.

She said I would have to go to Stroud College to see if I had dyslexia. I had the test on 25th February 2002 at six o'clock.

The test proved I had a reading, writing and spelling problem, so I started a course at Dursley College on a Tuesday night at six o'clock to eight o'clock each week.

I have been going to Dursley College for about one year.

I have to learn how to make up words and spell words.

I think in the year I have been going to the basic skills classes I can spell a lot more words and my reading is getting better.

I'm someone who has found a whole new angle on life through a stupid advert on the telly which sparked it all off. quote

I have had the same test last week as I had the day I started the course and it has proved I am getting better, so it proves to all the people out there with gremlins in the closet - if you admit you have got a problem there are courses to help you.

It goes to show there are people out there to help all of you.

I'm someone who has found a whole new angle on life through a stupid advert on the telly which sparked it all off!

Since starting his course Kevin's confidence has grown and he has been promoted to leading hand at Mastertaste in Dursley.
