A series
of heart attacks and strokes left Susan Jackson blind and feeling
worthless.
Her
handwriting had suffered because of her ill-health so Susan turned
to computers as a way of being able to communicate more clearly.
It
has been a long hard journey to recover her health, sight and self-confidence
but thanks to a flexi computer course at her local college, Susan,
from Coleford, is now forging ahead with plans to become a published
author and gain a degree.
With
the help of a student support worker, Susan is getting to grips
with word processing, desktop publishing and the internet.
"At
one stage I was so ill I was crawling round the house on my hands
and knees. I didn't feel like I would ever be a proper member of
society again," says Susan.

All my life I have been a very practical person - now I want
to use my brain as well. |

"The
course has given me back a lot of self-confidence. All my life I
have been a very practical person - now I want to use my brain as
well."
A former
State Registered Nurse, Susan has always been interested in alternative
medicine and would now like to study for degrees in homeopathy and
complimentary medicines.
She
also has a passion for Irish red and ehite setters, a breed which
she shows at Crufts, and is planning to write a book on the 'lost
years' of these lovely dogs.
She
has also found time to take up other courses including painting,
a skill she excelled in as a child, but thought she had lost along
with her sight.
"At
first I was too nervous to pick up a paintbrush after I got my sight
back. Now when I'm painting, it's the only time I feel really well."
