The
ancient Puesdown Inn stands on the A40 Cheltenham to Oxford Road
near Northleach.
Dating
from the 13th century, it stands at a remote spot on the top of
the Cotswolds, once a favourite spot with highwaymen.
Strange
noises and knocking sounds are common and ghostly footsteps walking
across the lounge and upstairs have been witnessed by a bar full
of people.
 |
The
Puesdown was a coaching inn on a route plagued by highwaymen
|
A horseman
in dark clothes has been seen silently riding away and one landlord
reported seeing a spectral coach and horses pull into the yard.
Local
folklore has it that a highwayman called The Duke who was shot nearby,
made his way to the inn and hammered on the door but died as he
got inside.
