Now
a small country town, the Saxon settlement of Winchcombe, north
of Cheltenham, was one of the most important towns in ancient Mercia.
 |
Several
ghostly monks have been seen in the town |
Kenelm,
son of King Offa (of Offa's Dyke fame) founded a Benedictine monastery
here.
This
may account for the preponderence of hooded apparitions which are
said to haunt the town, including one which is regularly seen in
a small lane known as The Monk's Walk.
Visitor
information: Winchcombe is on the B4632 seven miles north-east
of Cheltenham.
