On V.J night I was taken to see ‘Madame Butterfly’ in Liverpool by a friend. It hardly seemed appropriate, but was booked beforehand. I did not enjoy it very much. There were rejoicing crowds everywhere when we came out of the theatre, but after travelling back by the Underground we were stuck in a lift which was being operated by a young girl, who, unfortunately, had hysterics. It took a long time to get us to the surface — not a nice experience especially as it was very hot.

There was a huge sense of relief at the end of the war, of course, but the dropping of the atomic bomb at Hiroshima had very sinister connotations and some of us felt that it was like opening a Pandora’s Box on the world.
