One Sunday morning in the summer of 1940, my sister and I were sleeping late, and my young brother, Hugh, who was waiting to join the R.A.F, came home from his ѿý Guard exercises. Popping his head round the entrance to the shelter, he called out “The invasion has started!” — Fortunately this turned out to be another rumour — one of so many flying around at the time.

This story was collected by Lis Edwards and was submitted to the People’s War site by Becky Barugh of the ѿý Radio Shropshire CSV Action Desk on behalf of Mrs Margaret James. The story has been added to the site with her permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.
