3rd September, l939.

The grooves between the ridges of the elm
held my mind transfixed —immovable —
and for how long I cannot now recall.

Why was I then, alone, so deep in thought?
Sometime before we were together there —
the family — around that wireless set.

The impact of the dreaded news we heard
had stunned us into silent apprehension
of what could lie ahead for all our land.

That uninspiring voice in gravel tones,
I hear it even now after so long……
“This country is at war with Germany.â€
