I remember being evacuated at nine year old. We were put on a train at St. Peter's station and taken to Ferryhill station and taken to Chilton where I stayed for 16 months.

I remember the goods station being bombed - the fire burned for days with the sugar and butter being stored there. We used to sit in the air raid shelter listening to the bombs raining down - we were absolutely terrified never knowing who was next.

I remember the queues for food when I was twelve - I used to go the egg factory at six in the morning and standing till eight till they opened to get a dozen eggs which they cracked into a jug which supplemented the one egg we got on the ration.

I remember the bombs dropping on Union Guildford Place, a land mine at Mathew Bank, Dibley Street, Dalton Street and the Apollo.
