Barage Balloons

When i was 4 year old 58-59 years ago,
there was the barage balloons on benton way bank, the baloons were there to protect the ship yards. They were held in place by concrete blocks with big steel rings.

These were taken away in the sixties when they were dug up to make way for the opening of SWANS DRY DOCK.

There was also 4 houses in Gainer tce Wallsend which had APR's Air raid protection Shelters, The ARP's were cellars in these houses that were made out of bricks and concrete.
