Below is a letter sent by my Father to his parents on 7 June 1944. He was on the D-Day beaches, waiting to be taken off after the LSI he was on had its bows blown off by a mine while attempting to disembark soldiers. I have transcribed the letter as it was written:

Dear Mum and Dad
Here are a few lines to let you know I am feeling fit and well. Now that the worst part is over I may as well tell you that I was in the invaision of France. Belive me, I wouldn't have missed it for anything. I can't tell you anything about it but anyway I expect you have read the papers by now and know as much as I do. What I will tell you is, it must have been a wonderful encouragement for our soldiers when they saw all the ships and aircraft that were to help them on their way. I would write a book of what I saw, but I'm afraid the details will have to wait a little while.
Do not worry about me Mum, I am alright, keep smiling and look after yourselves.
Well Dad, all I can say is, if jerry can't do better, he'd better pack in, for if you saw the determined men we took across, you'd know there is'nt anything to touch a Britisher, there was'nt one man who did'nt want to go, and they made no bones about us who took them in. It really made me feel very proud to be in the navy.
Well Dad this seems to be all the time I have for writing, will write again when possible, cheerio for now,
Don't worry
Bert.
P.S. If you should see any of my friends tell them, I have'nt any time to write yet, but will do so at the first opportunity. If Ede has heard from my little gal, (which one did you say) the one in the A.T.S, ask her to write and tell her I am alright. Address enclosed.
